Meet the Last Hunter-Gatherer Tribe in East Africa
Lake Eyasi offers one of the most authentic cultural experiences in Tanzania. Home to the Hadzabe people - the last hunter-gatherer community in East Africa - this unique destination allows you to step back in time and experience how our ancestors lived over 10,000 years ago.
Unlike commercialized cultural tours, the Hadzabe experience is completely authentic. You'll join them on actual hunting expeditions, fruit gathering, and daily activities that they would perform whether visitors are present or not.
The region is also home to the semi-nomadic Datoga tribe, skilled metalworkers who create tools and jewelry from iron. Lake Eyasi itself attracts hundreds of bird species, making it a paradise for birdwatchers.
Join Hadzabe men on authentic hunting expeditions using traditional handmade bows and arrows. Follow animal trails, learn hunting techniques, and witness their incredible tracking skills. The hunt includes collecting honey and larvae from baobab trees.
Accompany Hadzabe women and children as they collect edible plants, fruits, tubers, berries, and nuts. Learn to identify edible plants and understand their traditional knowledge of the bush.
Learn to make bows and arrows, practice shooting techniques, create traditional jewelry, and understand their unique click language (Hadzane). Participate in traditional dances around the campfire.
Visit the semi-nomadic Datoga people, skilled metalworkers who create tools, weapons, and jewelry from iron. Participate in daily activities like grinding corn and observe their traditional ironwork techniques.
The salty, shallow waters attract hundreds of bird species including flamingos, pelicans, Fischer's lovebirds, weavers, and storks. Spot hippos in the lake and various ungulates in nearby bushes.
